Subscription audit guide

How to cancel popular subscriptions

Cancelling is rarely one click. Below are the current steps for the services people most often want to stop, the traps that keep charges alive after you think you've cancelled, and what to do afterwards so a forgotten renewal never surprises you again.

Cancellation steps, service by service

Streaming

Netflix

  1. Sign in at netflix.com on a browser (the mobile app hides billing on iOS).
  2. Open Account from the profile menu.
  3. Under Membership & Billing, choose Cancel Membership and confirm.

Watch out: If you signed up through Apple, Google, or a mobile carrier, cancel with that provider instead — Netflix cannot cancel it for you.

Adobe Creative Cloud

  1. Sign in at account.adobe.com and open Plans.
  2. Select Manage plan, then Cancel your plan.
  3. Work through the retention offers until you see a cancellation confirmation email.

Watch out: Annual plans paid monthly carry an early-termination fee of up to 50% of the remaining term unless you cancel within 14 days of purchase or renewal.

Microsoft 365

  1. Sign in at account.microsoft.com/services.
  2. Find the Microsoft 365 subscription and open Manage.
  3. Choose Cancel subscription and confirm.

Watch out: Cancelling within 30 days of a new purchase or renewal usually qualifies for a prorated refund; after that the term runs out.

Google One

  1. Open one.google.com and sign in.
  2. Choose Settings, then Cancel membership.
  3. Confirm and review the storage downgrade warning.

Watch out: If you are storing more than 15 GB after downgrade, Google stops new uploads and may delete content after two years over quota — export first.

Apple (App Store) subscriptions

  1. On iPhone, open Settings and tap your name, then Subscriptions.

  3. Tap Cancel Subscription and confirm.

Watch out: Anything bought through the App Store can only be cancelled at Apple — cancelling in the app's own website does nothing.

After you cancel: stop the ghosts coming back

Cancelling a handful of services is the easy part. The money usually leaks from the ones nobody remembers — a trial that converted, a duplicate plan a colleague bought, an annual renewal that lands eleven months after anyone looked at it. A short routine fixes it:

  1. Search your inbox for "receipt", "your invoice", "renews on", and "payment confirmation".
  2. Check your Apple App Store and Google Play subscription lists — store-billed plans hide there.
  3. Write down every survivor with its price, billing frequency, and next renewal date.
  4. Set a reminder a few days before each renewal so cancelling is a decision, not an accident.

SpendZen is built for exactly step three and four — and it never asks for your bank credentials. You add subscriptions manually, or paste a receipt email and let it read the vendor, amount, and renewal date for you. Renewal and price-increase alerts do the rest.

Common questions

Does cancelling a subscription refund the current month?

Usually not. Most services keep access until the end of the period you already paid for and simply stop the next charge. Annual plans and recent renewals are the exception — Adobe, Microsoft, and Amazon all offer refund windows if you act quickly.

Why does a charge keep appearing after I cancelled?

Almost always because the subscription was purchased through a different store than the one you cancelled in — Apple App Store, Google Play, a mobile carrier, or a reseller. Check your app-store subscriptions list before assuming the charge is a mistake.

How do I find subscriptions I forgot about?

Search your email for words like 'receipt', 'your invoice', 'renews on', and 'payment confirmation'. Log each one you find with its price and renewal date so the next renewal is never a surprise.

Do I need to link my bank account to track subscriptions?

No. SpendZen never asks for bank credentials. You add subscriptions manually, or paste a receipt email and let SpendZen read the vendor, amount, and renewal date from it.

Steps reflect each provider's published help documentation and can change — the linked official help page is always the authority. See SpendZen pricing if you want alerts on what you keep.
